What to do After a Car Accident

The buffalo isn't as dangerous as everyone makes him out to be. Statistics prove that in the United States more Americans are killed in automobile accidents than are killed by buffalo. ~ Art Buchwald

It happens to the best drivers at one time or another; you get into a car accident. Be prepared by making sure you have an emergency kit (below) in your car before anything happens.

First on the checklist of things to do after an accident: make sure everybody involved is okay and don't panic. Yeah, easier said than done. But it's important to keep a clear head and your wits about you for an accurate record of what happened.

Number two if you have a car accident: keep your mouth shut! What you say may be used against you so never admit fault. Here's a handy checklist that's illustrated to show you the next steps to take.

This one's kinda obvious, but don't try to take off. We've all seen news stories of how drivers who are involved in auto accident - especially drunk drivers - speed away from the scene of an accident; they nearly always get caught! So, access the scene and make sure the area is safe.

Another good checklist that includes a very valuable suggestion: make a visual record by taking lots of  photos. (Might as well because we all have a cellphone.)

Here's a good tip: download and print an accident report from your state and keep it in the glove compartment in case you have a car accident.

This video presents a lot of good information using a multiple choice quiz format - a pretty good way to test your knowledge about what to do after a car accident.

Never understood why people don't use seat belts. Here's a wonderful example of why it's important to buckle up. This guy had an angel on his shoulder on that day.

Many of the phenomena of winter are suggestive of an inexpressible tenderness and fragile delicacy. We are accustomed to hear this king described as a rude and boisterous tyrant; but with the gentleness of a lover he adorns the tresses of Summer. ~ Henry David Thoreau
